The Dragon Boat Festival(Chinese-English,thanks for your comments)
Dragon Boat Festival is a popular and traditional festival celebrated on the 5 day of 5 lunar month by Chinese. The festival is marked by holding dragon boat races, eating zongzi (a kind of dumpling make of sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), drinking yellow wine, hanging mugwort plants on doors and wearing sachet.
The dragon boat race is especially popular in the south of china because there are many rivers and lakeside. The dragon boat race has a legend. It’s said that Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet of Chu, who was persecuted by some treacherous court official of the time. He committed suicide in Miluo River without hesitation after hearing his motherland was annihilated and the day was on the 5 day of 5 lunar month. The local people tried to salve Qu Yuan’s corpse, so that the dragon boat race has been held since that time. Nowadays, it’s a national race for Chinese. I watched a dragon boat race at my hometown when I was a child of nature. It was held in Xiangjiang River Hunan Province. Racers carried a big wooden boat with a image of dragon’s head on their shoulders then laid it in watertight compartments. The racers in a dragon boat include a commander-in-chief, standing on the bow, waved a pennant and song a race song. The drummer beat a drum to cheer the rowers upon. The rowers tried their best to drive the boat as fast as possible. A piece of red cloth was used as the finish line. When race boats reached the line of sight, thousands of people were cheerfully. In 1980, dragon boat race was listed into the state sports competition programs and has since been held every year. The award is called "Qu Yuan Cup."
Mama taught how to make zongzi by sticky rice and bamboo leaves. In early times, it was only sticky rice dumplings wrapped in reed or other plant leaves and tied with colored thread, but now the fillings are more diversified, including jujube and bean paste, fresh meat, and ham and egg yolk. If time permits, people will soak glutinous rice, wash reed leaves and wrap up zongzi .The custom of eating zongzi is now popular in North and South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations. The custom of eating zongzi is also linked to a legend of Qu Yuan. When people heard that Qu Yuan has drowned himself in the Miluo River, they threw zongzi into the river, in hope that the fish and other animals would not eat Qu Yuan’s copse after eating too much of these foods. Year after year, it becomes a custom that people deliver their gratitude to Qu Yuan by eating zongzi on the 5 day of 5 lunar month.
The custom of drinking yellow wine at the Dragon Boat Festival also attaches much to Qu Yuan. It’s said that, on the day of Qu Yuan’s death, an old doctor poured a jug of yellow wine into the river, hoping to turn all aquatic animals drunk, which might eat Qu Yuan’s corpse. Later people drink yellow wine to worship Qu Yuan. People also sprinkle some yellow wine on their floors and doors for sterilization on that day.
Mama would hang mugwort plants on doors at the Dragon Boat Festival when I was a child. There are many mugwort plants around my house in Hunan. There is a folk tale about this custom. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, Huang Chao, the leader of farmers’ revolution, came across a woman who held a elder child in one arm and took a younger child by hand. He was puzzled about the woman and asked why she behaved so. The woman replied, “The government told us all to flee as Huang Chao’s soldiers are coming to massacre our city.” Huang Chao said, “why do you hold the elder child one arm while take the younger one by hand?” the woman answered, “ the elder is an orphan and the younger is my own son, when Hang Chao’s army arrived, I would flee with the elder and discard my own son.” Huang Chao was moved and said, “Tell the residents in your city hang two mugwort on their doors then soldiers would not kill you.” At the 5 day of 5 lunar month, Huang Chao captured the city, his army didn’t kill these residents, on the contrary, he order his soldiers distributed foods to them. From then on, people would hang mugwort plants on doors to honor Huang Chao at the 5 day of 5 lunar month.
Another special custom is wearing sachet. This is especially popular for children. There are arsenic sulphide and some other herbal medicines in the sachet. They can emit aroma and do benefits to people’s health. They are supposed to be able to ward off evil and avoid illness. Parents dress their children up with a sachet. They first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and finally string them with silk threads. The sachet will be hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment as an ornament.
